Applying to Grants on behalf of your Hospital

Overview

Partner hospitals sometimes want to pursue grants to boost their local Angel Fund fundraising. This guide explains what types of grants you can pursue, what to watch for, and what materials the myBalto Foundation can provide to make the process easier.

Important: Partner hospitals may apply for local grants only (not national grants). See details below.

1) National vs. local grants

National grants (not eligible for partner-hospital applications)

Partner hospitals should not apply for national grants on behalf of the myBalto Foundation.

Why: When an application is submitted under the myBalto Foundation name for a national grant, we may be obligated to distribute funds across all partner hospitals or support broader organizational operations unless we can demonstrate a clear, defensible allocation process. With a large and growing hospital network, that type of allocation process is difficult to administer at the hospital-by-hospital level.

What to do instead: the myBalto Foundation will pursue national grant opportunities directly so that all partner hospitals can benefit.

Local grants (eligible)

Local grants are typically simpler to administer and can be aligned to a specific community and partner hospital.

Partner hospitals may apply for local grants on behalf of the myBalto Foundation, as long as the application follows the guidelines in this article.

2) Key considerations for local grants

Before you apply, please fill out this very brief application form.

Why we ask:

·      So were aware of the application and can support you in a timely basis

·      To avoid multiple partner hospitals applying to the same grant at the same time

What must be clear in your grant application

When completing the grant application, please ensure the following points are clearly stated:

·      You are applying on behalf of the myBalto Foundation.

o   You cannot apply on behalf of your hospital if your hospital is not a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

·      Your hospital is not considered a chapter of the myBalto Foundation.

o   You are a partner hospital.

·      The myBalto Foundation is not acting as a fiscal sponsor for your hospital.

o   Fiscal sponsorship requires a different structure and advance coordination.

o   As of 4/29/26, the myBalto Foundation does not offer fiscal sponsorships due to bandwidth limitations.

·      Grant checks must be made payable to: The myBalto Foundation.

o   Our banking institution cannot accept checks made out to another entity.

·      Send any proposed grant language to our team for review before submitting.

o   This helps ensure alignment with our mission/values and avoids language that could create compliance or governance issues.

3) Materials and templates to make local grant applications easier

Most local grant applications will request documentation from the nonprofit entity (the myBalto Foundation). We can provide the items below.

Commonly requested items (available upon request)

·      IRS 501(c)(3) Determination Letter

·      W-9 form

·      Letter certifying you are indeed a partner hospital of the myBalto Foundation

o   Black logo

o   White logo

The myBalto Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to keep pets with the people who love them, and to support the veterinarians who fight for them every day. Through innovative technology and a community-driven model, we strengthen local veterinary hospitals and help remove financial stress from critical care moments.
