How to ask owners to round up?

Who to ask?

How to add "round-up" to my invoice?

Fundraising Services

Helpful Information

  • As pet owners approach the front desk to pay their bill, your client services team will ask them, "Would you like to "Round-Up" $1, $3, or $5 to help support the myBalto Foundation, an organization that supports pets in financial need at this hospital?"
    • If the owner agrees to the "Round-Up", you can simply add the appropriate line item charge onto their invoice, and continue with their checkout.

  • NEW FEATURE: You can also use it for client's that have a CREDIT on their account. For example, if an owner has a $15 credit on their account, you can ask, "Would you like us to credit the $15 to the card on file, or would you like to donate it to the myBalto Foundation, which helps pets in need at this hospital? If you do donate, we will also supply you a tax receipt at the end of the year for your donation!"

Say Round Up, not Donate!

  • Several studies have shown that saying, "Round-Up" leads to a 30% increase in funds received relative to saying, "Donate".

Give options!

  • The reason we ask $1, $3, or $5 is that psychologically, individuals are more likely to choose the middle option rather than saying no. Owners often will not give the highest amount, but don't want to give the lowest either (for fear of being seen as "cheap") and will often choose $3.

You don't have to ask everyone!

  • Not every client needs to be asked to "Round-up", but you do want to make it a part of your normal check out process. Clients to reconsider asking would be those already upset with the cost of services or an owner that just lost a loved one.

Best Practices for using the myBalto Foundation's Claim Submission Platform

Although the intent of the myBalto Foundation is to give your veterinary team the flexbility to help any patient that needs medical assistance, there are some "suggestions" to help make sure you get the most out of your hospital's funds.

Use the Foundation as your LAST RESORT!

Our goal has always been to minimize the number of economic euthanasias we perform as an industry, but we know we can't do it alone! If you always look to the myBalto Foundation as your first resource, you will quickly run out of funds and not have it when you need it most!

Just like child care, it takes a village! We recommend having owners use other resources first such as:

  • Friends/Family members/Personal Credit
  • Care Credit, Scratch Pay - medical lines of credit
  • VetBilling or Varidi (soft credit check)- veterinary specific payment plans

Also, instead of normally giving the whole service away for free, you can consider using the myBalto Foundation to cover 1/2 of the costs to help stretch your funds out further!

However, these are just suggestions- you can use your funds whenever you want, regardless of what steps have already been taken!

It's best NOT to have one person be in charge of all approvals

The benefits of the myBalto Platform are that it can be used quickly and easily, regardless of the time of day or night. Although we understand wanting to regulate how much each doctor can use the fund, you don't want to take away the most beneficial features of the program!

Options you can consider to maximize hospital efficiency:

  • Each doctor can use $X a year from the myBalto Foundation whenever they want
  • Any doctor can use the fund as long as they have a colleague's support
  • Multiple individuals who can "Approve" use of the funds

Not recommended:

  • Only one admin to approval claim submissions- particularly for ER/Specialty Hospitals. You don't want to have to wake this person up at 3AM or worse, not be able to reach them when you need the funds most.
